STANDARD C-5718

STANDARD C-5718

The "Black-Box"-radio. This STANDARD mobile-radio for VHF and UHF was a very comfortable radio with a full-remote-control microphone. In combination with the option CRC-5700 this black-box becomes a compact radio with direct control, better known as C-5700. STANDARD has released two single-band radios in the same look at the same time: The C-1208 for VHF and the C-4208 for UHF.

Every STANDARD radio had specials. This radio's special is the small size and the remote-mike. So users are able to place the "black-box" in the trunk and control the radio completely by mike. The C-5708 had been one of the first radios that was able to be connected to 1k2 or 9k6 packet-radio modems without modding because those radios had a special plug for packet already on board.

On many STANDARD C-5708 after some years display starts blinking. Sometimes blinking will stop again and the radio will work as it should. During the blinking receiver and transmitter don't work. What has happend? The anser has took me some hours to find and is not satisfying: A blinking display mostly means that PLL doesn't lock. Because of the small size many stages of this radio had to be built in a very small size or even to be integrated in other stages. This was done on the PLL-unit. PLL, modulation and base-signal all are being generated in one unit. This unit is a high-integrated circuit called KH036Y. You can see this circuit in the picture under this text. And now here comes the sad answer for this blinking problem: The integrated circuit ( = IC ) runs under pretty much current that leads to a high temparature inside circuit. After some years high temparature leads to damage of the PLL-circuit. All signals are ok - except the PLL-signal. Even if you try to get the parts out of the metal-case you won't be able to repair the broken circuit because it is impossible to get spare-parts. As well as the C-5708 the C-1208 and the C-4208 have the same problem. And this is the sad problem of all C-5708 with blinking display.

Broken unit. Not repairable.

häufige Fragen zum STANDARD C-5718

Some C-5708 are labeled as C-5700. Difference is, that the C-5700 has a frontpanel ( option CRC-5700 ). The C-5708 has no frontpanel ( black-box ) and will only be controlled by the multi-mike.

Maximum lengt of separation-cable between C-5708 and microphone or frontpanel CRC-5700: 8m

Yes, it is normal that plastic cover on mike will get loose.

Reason for low audio mostly is caused by broken caps in the af-unit.

If your C-5708 won't switch on again most reasen is the switching-transistor.

Origin spare parts are no longer available by STANDARD, YAESU or STABO, radio is out of service.
