Story and pricing of STANDARD C-50 C-55

As on many other rare hamradio rigs used-prices depend on condition and market. This C-50 and C-55 is very rare. In Germany less than 20 of them have been sold. Price for new ones was around 2.500 Deutsche Mark. A very luxury invest at the beginning 1990es. Used ones were traded for round about 800 Euros in 2011 (base-rig). And additional abt. 1.000 Euros for optional 23cm or 10m units.

Report and description on STANDARD C-50 C-55

In Germany the STANDARD C-55 D came into the market in 1990. Just under one dozen oft these precious radio sets were sold in Germany. So the STANDARD C55 is an extremely rare and highly traded attachment for collectors. The dimensions are similar to those of at that time common soundsystems for living rooms. The basic configuartion of the C-55 offers transmit and receive mode for 2m and 70cm. Additionally options for 23cm or 10m were available for retrofitting. The STANDARD C-55 D offers strong 50W for 2m and 40W rf-output for 70cm. The optional additional module provides 50W for 10m and 10W for 23cm

Those optional units for 23cm or 10m did cost a lot of money.

Many fine and luxury features

STANDARD would not be STANDARD if there were not some special features. So it is on the STANDARD C-50 and C-55. For example some plugs for ATV or PaketRadio. Furthermore, the C-55 had already an optional voice recorder, DTMF and CTCSS. Extensive scan functions and comfort features make the STANDARD C-55 complete.

Electrical driven volume knobs

In addition to the frequencies even the motorized driven radio-volume control and even more can be remote controlled by remote.

VF-Display and illuminated knobs in night-view.

Another delicacy is the illumination oft he STANDARD C-55 D. A yellow VFD-display informs about the current frequency. All of the six control units for muting and sound level are illuminated by a red marker.

Clear and good to use operating elements.

The handling is far ahead of present-day radios. Nobody needs 100.000 buttons and menus. At that time STANDARD counted on a few unambiguous buttons. The second function can be enabled by the button „FUNC“. The gap between the buttons is comfortably broad as well. A large display and a clear beep tone inform clearly about adjustment and input.

Real keys (frog-buttons) for clear using

A radio with an extremely high technical standard with spartan menus and an evident button labeling. Input is done by some keys on the front of the plastic cover with - you won't believe it: classic mechanical keys.

well-arranged and modular - STANDARD C-50 C55

High-level constuction for high-level user

Now to the inside of the radio. If one had not seen it, it has been hard to believe what a loving and extensive effort is processed in the STANDARD C-50 and C-55. There is a main board, the power supply, the controll-unit and the rf-unit. Modular composition. Consistently. Special attention has to be payed to the RF-unit. ! Each ! band has it’s own unit. Those units are built up like the units from the STANDADRD mobile radios. Each of those frequency units makes complete management of receiving and transmitting for "his" band.

The units for 2m, 70cm and optional 23cm or 10m are leaded separately.

Controll of af-amplification manages the mainboard and frontboard. The control processor is at the front panel. You read right: O N E processor controls the entire radio! If for no other reason than that the STANDARD C-55 is long-lasting. A lot of todays radios are suggestive of the case, that the developer team gets bogged down with Software and rarely needed details. The STANDARD C-55 shows impressively, that the boys ( and maybe also girls ?) at that time took a completely different line. Evident in Design and build-up, a simple and ergonomic handling, transparent documentation.

Excellent review for this magnificent transceiver. I agree for overall description, but i have to share with you some bad experience from internal switching power supply.
I have 3 pieces of this transceiver. Two of them in full working condition, one with some problem on CPU i think (needs more investigate). One of them equiped with 1.2 GHz module, end the two other covers the 144-430 MHz band. The two of three internal switching power supply (manufactured by Tamura) have burn the pair 2SK1012 power mosfet by FEC perhaps due to bad design of early days of manufacturing at this type of power supply’s. Don’t matter if the transceiver is on, or standby mode (clock mode). One more reference for this transceiver it’s the wrong and useless for present days the frequency (80 MHz) for the wireless voice remote control. The band is very noisy due to very strong signals of public radio broadcast. On the other hand the infrared section works nicely.
Thank you for reading.
